Kathy Criddle is offering 4 after-work wildflower hikes on Badger mountain. (Click on the image above for a larger view.) Kathy has been a drought tolerant gardener and wildflower enthusiast in the Columbia Basin for over twenty years. She is a member of the Columbia Basin chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society, a long time member of the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society and a new member of the Ice Age Floods Institute. Call (509)947-4074 to confirm. Wear sturdy walking shoes, bring water, sunblock and a hat. Meet at the Skyline Trail parking lot just off of Dallas Road. Directions: To reach the trailhead, from I-182 exit onto Queensgate North. Turn left on Duportail Street (at Wal-Mart). Turn right on Kennedy Road (just past the Home Depot) and take it to Dallas Road, crossing Keene. Turn left on Dallas. Go up the hill, under the I-182 overpass and continue to the top of hill. Right before the orchard, turn left on 210 PR NE, a gravel road with three branches. Go a few hundred yards on the middle road to the parking area on the right. The group will meet in the parking area.
Meet at Whitmans' Harper Joy parking area to carpool to the CTUIR plant nursery near Pendleton. Ruth will provide tour of the nursery and then a hike to nearby tribal areas to view native plants. Bring water and lunch, for this day-long outing.
Meet at the WSU CIC parking lot for a trip to the Saddle Mountains to see bitterroot with Steve Link. Bring a lunch, water, and sun screen. We should return by 3:00 p.m. or earlier.
Join us as we watch the full Flower Moon rise over the Horse Heaven Hills (click on the image at right for a larger view). We will meet at the trailhead parking area at Trailhead Park in Richland. Take Keene to Shockley Road (near Bethel Church). Take Shockley to the end. Turn left on Queensgate and go up the hill to the trailhead parking area. Round trip distance is three miles and total time will be about an hour and a half. The trail is steep in places and we will be returning in the dark. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a flashlight and water. Contact Greg McCann for further information.
The Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society leads a bird walk on Bateman Island the first Saturday of the month. Meet at the Wye Park off Columbia Parkway, Hwy 240. See the LCBAS web site for more information.
Special events take place at McNary National Wildlife Refuge on the second Saturday of every month, usually from 9 a.m. to noon. Call (509)543-8322 for details on Second Saturday programs. McNary NWR Education Center is located at 311 Lake Road, Burbank. Turn on east on SR 124 at Hood Park, go for a mile and turn right on Lake Road to Maple Street for the right turn to the parking lot.
